Whole-Grain Cereal May Not Be the Healthy Breakfast Many Believe, Expert Says

A health expert is challenging the common belief that whole-grain cereal is one of the healthiest breakfast choices. He argues that while whole grains contain beta-glucans, the amount found in a typical serving is too low to significantly lower cholesterol. He also says cereals are high in starches that quickly break down into sugar, causing blood sugar spikes and leaving people hungry soon after eating.

The expert also raises concerns about modern wheat, claiming it may contribute to gut inflammation because of compounds such as phytic acid, gluten, and fructans. According to him, these substances can reduce mineral absorption, trigger bloating, and lead to digestive discomfort in some people. He also points to processed ingredients and added synthetic vitamins as reasons to question the nutritional value of many breakfast cereals.

Instead of eating cereal, the expert recommends skipping breakfast if a person is not truly hungry. He says extending the overnight fasting period may help the body burn fat for energy, reduce cravings, and support natural repair processes. For those who prefer breakfast, he suggests choosing protein-rich foods such as eggs, cheese, yogurt, or bacon while avoiding refined carbohydrates like bread and sugary cereals.
