Amnesty International has warned that El Salvador's intensive crackdown on street gangs and drug trafficking networks, initiated in 2022, could amount to crimes against humanity due to widespread human rights violations. The human rights organization reports that authorities have detained approximately 90,000 individuals extrajudicially, many without a clear legal basis. Furthermore, at least 470 deaths have been documented within the nation's prison system during this period. The group criticizes the government's harsh security measures, citing systematic abuses and a lack of due process for those caught in the sweeping anti-crime operations.
