The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) has issued an urgent warning to the public, particularly those living in high-risk zones, to remain extremely vigilant regarding landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO). As heavy rains and floods triggered by two major storms affect various regions, there is a high risk that these lethal remnants of war could be unearthed and displaced from their original locations. Floodwaters have the potential to carry explosives into areas previously cleared or thought to be safe, posing a direct threat to local communities. The CMAA advises residents to avoid touching any suspicious metallic objects and to report any findings immediately to local authorities or mine clearance teams. Staying informed and cautious during this period is essential to prevent tragic accidents as the floodwaters continue to shift the landscape in contaminated areas.
