UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Friday, June 26, urged U.S. authorities to conduct independent investigations into the growing number of deaths within Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities. The UN expressed deep concern over the rising fatalities, citing reports of substandard living conditions and inadequate medical care for detainees. The international body called on the United States to implement stricter oversight of its detention centers and to ensure that detention is used only as a last resort, prioritizing the human rights and safety of migrants.
