RATANAKIRI: Thousands of hectares of state forest land in Kon Mom district are being systematically cleared and burned to make way for plantations, aimed at securing illegal private ownership. Reports suggest that wealthy and influential individuals are behind the encroachment, allegedly hiring poor residents to clear the land before purchasing it from them. Despite the massive scale of destruction, local authorities and specialized officials have yet to take effective action to stop the activities. The affected forest area is located in Kambak village, Teun commune, Kon Mom district, Ratanakiri province. Observations at the site reveal that significant portions of the land have already been planted with rubber trees aged between one and two years, while other sections are being prepared for cassava cultivation. The clearing and burning have transformed once-lush forests into barren landscapes under the guise of rotational farming, while the ultimate goal is to facilitate the illegal sale of state property to powerful buyers.
