This year’s Photo Phnom Penh festival unveils a story of adventure, courage, and unbreakable bonds through the extraordinary journey of two Cambodian women, Hoeung Soeum and Sophon Chau.
Their exhibition, Freedom of Two Ladies, hosted at The Peak from November 19 to December 12, captures an incredible 12,000-kilometer motorbike journey across Cambodia’s 25 provinces over 367 days. Each photograph reflects a theme of pure freedom, inviting audiences to experience their remarkable adventure.
“How does it feel to truly live the life you dream of?” posed a representative from the festival’s organizing team. “Hoeung and Sophon’s journey answers this question with courage, self-discovery, and empowerment.”
Leaving behind their routine lives, Hoeung and Sophon embraced Cambodia’s natural beauty, rich culture, and heritage. Their path was filled with scenic landscapes and challenges, building lasting memories and an unshakable friendship along the way.
“This project is more than a travel narrative,” shared the organizers. “It’s a vibrant collection of stories, experiences, and flavors that reflect the essence of Cambodian life.”
The journey wasn’t just about distance but about personal growth, empowerment, and celebrating the joy of exploring one’s homeland. Hoeung, an advocate for education and the environment, studied agricultural economics in Phnom Penh and later pursued sustainable development in New Zealand. Sophon, a champion of youth and women’s empowerment, has over a decade of experience in social accountability and livelihood programs.
“Our journey proves that capabilities are not defined by gender or social status,” said Sophon. “We hope to inspire others to take charge of their lives and create their own opportunities.”
