Authorities from the Internal Security Department of Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior arrested over 300 Chinese and Vietnamese nationals suspected of operating an illegal online gambling operation in Phnom Penh. The arrests followed a raid on Sunday at the "Meanchey Apartment" building in Stung Meanchey III commune, Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district.
Lieutenant Colonel Vong Kimlong, Deputy Chief of the Internal Security Police Office, said the raid was initiated after an investigation revealed that many foreign nationals, predominantly Chinese, lived in the building under suspicious circumstances and rarely left the premises.
Police suspected that the building’s occupants might be involved in drug use, human trafficking, or other illegal activities. Acting on a court prosecutor's warrant, officers searched the apartments and apprehended the suspects.
“During the raid, we discovered evidence, including laptops, computers, mobile phones, and other materials linked to the illegal operation,” Lt. Col. Kimlong stated. The suspects have been transferred to the General Department of Immigration for further questioning and investigation.
He added that those found guilty of legal violations will face prosecution and penalties under Cambodian law. Meanwhile, individuals without proper documentation to live and work in Cambodia but not involved in illegal activities will be deported. Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover further details about the operation.
