Indian Tourists Embrace Cambodia’s Spiritual and Cultural Ties with India

Unlike most international visitors, many Indian tourists come to Cambodia not just for sightseeing but to reconnect with their spiritual roots. Cambodia’s ancient temples, deeply influenced by Hinduism and Brahmanism, hold a special significance for Indian travelers, reflecting a shared cultural and religious heritage between the two nations.

Many Khmer temples, including Angkor Wat, Kulen Mountain, and Kbal Spean, were originally dedicated to Brahmanism or Hinduism before Buddhism became predominant in Cambodia. These temples resonate with Indian mythology and traditions, making them especially meaningful for Indian tourists.

Nhoem Sidet, a Siem Reap-based tour guide, explains that Indian visitors are often captivated by the religious carvings and mythology surrounding Hindu deities like Shiva and Vishnu. “They come not just to see but to worship, offer prayers, and recite religious texts. Their visits are deeply spiritual,” he said. Sidet added that Indian tourists display great respect for the artifacts and rituals associated with these temples, treating their visits as pilgrimages rather than casual outings.

In 2024, Cambodia and India launched the inaugural "Cambodia-India Year of Tourism" to strengthen tourism ties. Direct flights between Phnom Penh and New Delhi began in mid-2024, with additional routes connecting New Delhi to Phnom Penh and Kolkata to Siem Reap planned for February 2025. This improved connectivity is expected to boost Indian tourist numbers further.

According to Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism, Indian arrivals reached 69,063 in the first 11 months of 2024, marking a 13.2% increase from 2023. Although Indian tourists are not yet among the top 10 nationalities visiting Cambodia, their numbers are steadily growing.

Khiev Thy, president of the Khmer Angkor Tour Guides Association, observed that Indian tourists feel a deep sense of pride in Cambodia’s shared cultural and religious ties with India. He added that while they have high service expectations, their reverence for Cambodia’s heritage underscores the profound connection between the two nations.
