A team of nine Cambodian high school students achieved an impressive 2nd place finish at the 2024 FIRST Global Challenge, held in Athens, Greece, from September 26-29. Competing against teams from over 190 countries, their success underscores Cambodia’s growing strength in science and technology.
The students were honored at a special reception on October 21, hosted by the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation. During the event, the team reaffirmed their dedication to advancing robotics technology in Cambodia, according to an October 22 press release from the ministry.
Dav Ansan, the Ministry’s secretary of state, praised the students for their accomplishments on behalf of the industry minister Hem Vanndy. He highlighted the crucial role of science and technology in shaping Cambodia’s future and lauded the team for their communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Ansan encouraged them to continue striving for excellence, reminding them of their vital role in realizing Cambodia’s 2050 vision of becoming a high-income country.
The competition, themed “Feeding the Future,” focused on using robotics to tackle global energy challenges. The Cambodian team spent months designing their robot, demonstrating creativity and collaboration while exchanging innovative ideas about energy efficiency. Their success serves as an inspiration for the next generation of Cambodian engineers and scientists.
