Cambodia and Malaysia have explored potential collaboration to address air pollution caused by plastic waste. This important initiative was discussed during a meeting between Eang Sophalleth, Cambodia’s Minister of Environment, and ONN Shaharuddin, Malaysia’s Ambassador to Cambodia, held on February 3, 2025, at the Ministry of Environment in Cambodia.
Minister Sophalleth expressed his deep appreciation for Malaysia’s efforts and the contributions of its citizens in addressing pollution sources in the atmosphere, which have positively impacted the region and humanity as a whole. He emphasized the urgent need to combat global climate change by reducing the use of plastic bags and preventing plastic waste from entering waterways, landfills, and the atmosphere.
“The joint efforts of Cambodia and Malaysia will help ensure our ASEAN region remains clean and beautiful, improve public health, reduce the prevalence of diseases, and attract both domestic and international tourists to explore the tourism corridors connecting our countries in the region,” the Minister stated.
In response, Ambassador Shaharuddin affirmed Malaysia’s commitment to working alongside Cambodia under the framework of ASEAN cooperation to strengthen environmental initiatives. He highlighted the shared goal of achieving a clean, green, and sustainable environment across the region.
The discussion underscored the importance of regional collaboration in addressing environmental challenges, particularly air pollution caused by plastic waste, and highlighted the potential for joint efforts to create a healthier and more sustainable future for ASEAN nations.
