Six Chinese nationals were apprehended by Vietnamese authorities while attempting to enter Vietnam to journey to Cambodia to allegedly join an online scam syndicate. The arrests took place at a small border crossing near the Lao Bao International Border Gate in Quang Tri province, on the Vietnam-Laos border.
The Quang Tri Border Guard Command announced the temporary detention of the six individuals who had entered Vietnam illegally. According to a report by VN Express on Tuesday, the Chinese nationals claimed they had been introduced and guided by unidentified individuals. They were transported by a hotel owner in the Golden Triangle area to Sepon in Laos, from where they rented motorbikes to continue their journey.
The Golden Triangle, a region known for its illicit activities, has seen increased scrutiny as authorities attempt to curb the movement of criminals and illegal operations. The six detainees’ attempt to make it to Cambodia highlights the ongoing issue of transnational crime in the region.
Cambodia has become a notorious hub for online scam operations over the past decade. These scams, often referred to as “pig butchering,” involve grooming and deceiving victims over time before defrauding them. Many of these operations are run by Chinese nationals, exploiting the relatively lax enforcement in certain areas.
The Cambodian government has been under pressure to crack down on these criminal networks.
