Cambodia’s Senior Minister Thong Khon, Chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), received a courtesy call from Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia this morning at the NOCC.
During the meeting, Cambodia and Japan discussed a number of sports-related activities in order to strengthen cooperation on the development of high-level sports, including judo, karate, taekwondo, and gymnastics, in preparation for the upcoming international sport events and the 5th Asian Youth Games in 2029 to be hosted by Cambodia.
Khon requested the ambassador to consider two points, firstly, to request a Japanese coach who specialises in karate, judo, and gymnastics to help train Cambodians, and secondly, to offer scholarships in karate, judo, and gymnastics training in Japan for Cambodian athletes to prepare for the games.
In the past, Japan has cooperated on the development of sports with Cambodia many times, especially for big events, like when the former Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, Ogawa Gotaro, helped to send Cambodian athletes to train in Japan in judo and karate before the SEA Games 2023 in Cambodia and those fighters won gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Also during the preparation of ASEAN Para Games 2023 in Cambodia, the Japanese team organised the disability classification of 60 disabled athletes to ensure the event ran smoothly and successfully.
