A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday in Prek Long village, Roka Khpos commune, Takhmao city of Kandal province, when a 49-year-old man, Phon Sok, set fire to his own home.
The house, measuring 5m x 6m and built with concrete pillars, a wooden frame, and galvanised walls, was completely destroyed along with a sack of rice, important documents including an accommodation book, family book, birth certificate, and other belongings.
Authorities quickly responded to the situation. Despite efforts of the village chief and administrative police, the fire could not be contained due to the isolated location and insufficient water supply.
Following the incident the judge in charge, Chea Sok Chandet, and Prosecutor Chuon Sopanha, decided to charge and detain Phon Sok.
According to Kha Denna, spokesman for the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, and So Sarin, spokesman for the Kandal Provincial Court, the charges are based on allegations that Sok was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the incident.
Sok has been charged under the penal code Article 43 of the Law on Drugs.
