Cambodia is marking the 19th anniversary of Sbek Thom, also known as Khmer Shadow Theatre, being inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, a recognition of its profound cultural significance.
According to the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, Sbek Thom was officially included in the UNESCO list on November 25, 2005. Since then, the nation has celebrated this achievement annually, reflecting its pride in preserving and promoting this unique art form.
Sbek Thom is a traditional shadow theatre distinguished by its two-metre-high, non-articulated puppets crafted from intricately designed leather. Tracing its origins to before the Angkorian era, it holds a sacred status alongside the Royal Ballet and mask theatre. Performances are dedicated to divinities and historically took place only on special occasions, such as Khmer New Year, the King’s birthday, or ceremonies honoring notable individuals.
Following the fall of Angkor in the 15th century, Sbek Thom transformed from a purely ritualistic practice into a recognized art form, while still maintaining its ceremonial roots.
Peanh Sombath, owner of the Art of Khmer Shadow Theatre shop, expressed his joy at seeing this cherished art form gain international recognition. As a sculptor and passionate advocate of Khmer shadow theatre, Sombath has observed growing appreciation, with more people purchasing these artworks to decorate homes and offices.
“I am committed to preserving Khmer shadow theatre for future generations,” Sombath shared, emphasizing that his work is not just a livelihood but also a mission to raise awareness of Khmer culture. He called on all Cambodians to support this traditional art form, ensuring its lasting presence in society and its continuity for generations to come.
