Malaysia has declared a state of emergency in the Serian district of Sarawak state on Borneo island due to severe transboundary haze caused by forest fires in Indonesia. The thick, toxic smoke has deteriorated air quality to hazardous levels, threatening public health. In response to the crisis, the Malaysian government has temporarily closed 647 schools in the affected region and launched cloud-seeding operations to induce rain and clear the dangerous smog.
