If you chase other people's praise or validation, you will never be truly happy.
When I was young, I used to think that my worth was determined by the number of people who found me attractive and interesting, especially men. I cared about my appearance, about what other people say. I believe that many people, especially young women, have felt the same way because we were taught by society that if we're pretty, if we're desirable, then we have worth. When people give wishes for boys, they wish for them to grow up to be a successful person and earn lots of money, but when people give girls wishes, they wish for them to be grow up to be pretty. This kind of thing makes women think that our best attribute is our beauty.
But as I grow up, I start to realize that other people's words and attention don't determine my worth. I wasn't born to please anyone--for anyone's gaze. Besides, people are fickle, and so are their praise and validation. If you chase their validation, you won't be happy. You'd do everything to please others.
What I've learned is that there's one person whose words matter the most. One person who determines my worth and happiness. And that person is me. I've learned to accept myself, to love the person I see in the mirror. If I feel good about myself, that's enough.
People have said things to me like I'm flat or criticized certain parts of my body. But those words no longer matter to me because I don't even know these people. Why would I give value to their words? Why would I give them the power to decide my happiness? I've seen people say that men don't like women who look a certain way, have tattoos, colored hair, or have certain attributes. But right now, my mantra is, I don't live to please anyone other than myself.
